Orphan and Rare Diseases

Taxonomy Code: YF-3000.5760

Any of a variety of rare pathological conditions that affect fewer than 200,000 people in the United States. Orphan diseases are further defined as those whose occurrence is so rare that research regarding treatment has not been a priority, or any non-rare diseases whose treatments are not considered profitable. Orphan diseases are designated through the FDA’s Orphan Drug Act, which incentivizes research and treatment development by providing financial assistance, such as tax credits and grant funding. The National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) maintains a list of rare diseases.
